Travel to Tonga

In 2019 & 2020 we very special experiences for you! Join us to snorkel and swim with humpback whales! Two different destinations available, both once in a lifetime experiences. Every summer mother humpback whales travel from the feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warm waters of Tonga to give birth to their babies. The King of Tonga declared the ocean surrounding this island chain in the South Pacific a whale sanctuary after these amazing animals were almost hunted to extinction. With a maximum of 8 people on a boat, we spend hours on the ocean watching them breach, tail slap, spy hop, and then we slip into the water to swim with the humpback whales. When we depart from shore, you never know what to expect as every day is a gift from the ocean. These are very special trips and we have full brochures upon request. Plane fare and travel to and from the destination not included in the price. Because these are very unique experiences, your host Ocean Annie, personally knows all the people joining. If you feel the whales calling you, let’s get you in the water with these gentle giants!

Dr. Roger Hanlon’s runs the Hanlon Lab at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, which is an affiliate of the University of Chicago. The Hanlon Lab is dedicated to the study of camouflage in animals. His latest book, Octopus, Squid, and Cuttlefish: a Visual, Scientific Guide to the Ocean’s Most Advanced Invertebrate is available here. You can also get his latest in Cephalopod Behaviour here.

Dr. Hanlon and his assitant will be bringing with them their Hyper Spectral Imager (HSI), a specialized camera that can capture an incredible 16 colors per pixel as opposed to the three that all our cameras capture. They will be using this to capture cephalopod behavior, camouflaging, and more. Annie first met Roger nearly 20 years ago when he was studying flamboyant cuttlefish and mimic octopus. This reunion trip is going to be one for history as their presentations on imaging and behavior are sure to get every one as excited about cephalopods as they are!

West Papua is a unique dive region. The best known archipelago is "Raja Ampat" which means "4 kings". The area has over 1,500 islands. The four main islands are Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo.

The Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat lies in the Coral Triangle. This expanse of 40,000 square kilometers of marine territory and pristine reefs make these waters a diving haven second to none. Reputed to be the most biodiverse marine habitat on Earth, Raja Ampat is home to many species not found anywhere else. Spectacular, exciting, brilliant, phenomenal, are just a few words that come to mind for this underwater divers dream destination.
